Description

Alexander Calder (1898–1976) revolutionized the art of sculpture with his distinctive modernism, freeing sculpture from a fixed base and adding mobility to the art itself. He rose to fame in the 1930s with the renowned miniature Calder’s Circus, but his modernist creativity skyrocketed with his wire sculptures, an invention he described as “drawing in space.”

A contemporary and friend of Marcel Duchamp, Joan Miró, and Piet Mondrian—who greatly influenced his evolution—this genius tinkerer, perhaps best known for his mobiles, was fueled by artistic renewal, creating unexpected shapes like his huge stabile sculptures, now exhibited worldwide.

This film retraces Calder’s unique quest and explores the masterpieces that have left an indelible mark on the history of 20th-century art.
