Finding Publications

There are two ways to find publications on Publications.USA.gov. You can browse for publications by clicking on the category buttons in the left navigation area of the site, or you can use the search box.

You can narrow your search by first selecting the category from the drop down box, then selecting the format type you want and lastly whether you would like to view English, Spanish or "all." The default for each search option is "all."

Once you find a publication you want, click on the publication title to get additional information about the publication. The description will tell you the sponsoring agency, number of pages, whether it is available in print, for PDF download, and whether it is available in another language other than English.

If a publication is available for ordering, we will note this in the publication description. We will also tell you if the publication is available for download, in which formats, cost (if any), and whether it is available in a language other than English. If you wish to order a print copy, simply add the desired number in the quantity box. Please note possible quantity limitations next to the quantity box. Click "Add to Cart."

Using the Shopping Cart

You can change the quantity or remove a publication from your shopping cart at any time. You may order as many free publications as you wish (some limitations per publication) and as many sales publications as you like, as long as the total cost of the order does not exceed the $500.00 order threshold. The shopping cart automatically calculates the total of your order as you add to and remove publications.

Submitting an Order
To place an order when you have finished shopping, you will first need to view your shopping cart. To go to your shopping cart, click the shopping cart image located in the top right-hand corner of all Publications.USA.gov website pages. Review the items and quantities you have selected; update as needed. To remove an item from your cart, enter a zero (0) in the quantity box. Once your items and quantities are correct, and you are ready to place your order, click the "Update Cart" button below your order summary and "Check Out." This will begin the check out process:

Step 1. Shipping Address: On this page, enter all of the required shipping information, including name, address, city, state, ZIP code and e-mail address. Upon completion, click the "Submit Order" button at the bottom of the page.

Step 2. Finalize Order: This page offers you a final chance to review your order and shipping information before submitting your order. Once you have reviewed your order information, click the "Place Order" button. If you have a dollar balance, your screen will direct you to click the "Enter Credit Card" button. You will be taken to Pay.gov (a secure online payment system owned and operated by the United States Government) where you will enter your card information and billing address.

Step 3. Order Confirmation and Receipt: If your order has been processed successfully, you will receive your order confirmation, including your Publications.USA.gov Order Number, which you will need when contacting us regarding your order.

Order Number
Once an item has been added to the shopping cart, it is automatically assigned an order number (e.g. Order Number 2001). This number will appear on your confirmation e-mail and should be used as a point of reference when inquiring about the status of an online order. Retain your order number for your reference.

If you provided your e-mail address in Step 3, you will receive an e-mail confirmation and order receipt shortly. This concludes your order. You can either continue shopping, or leave the Publications.USA.gov website.

To help us answer any questions about your order, please include your e-mail address and daytime telephone number. Your contact information will not be used for any other purpose.

Payment Methods

Payment in U.S. dollars must accompany all orders that have for cost publications. Publications.USA.gov accepts the following methods of payment:

  • Visa, MasterCard, Discover American Express accounts -- All credit card orders must include the account number and expiration date of the credit card.

Publications.USA.gov uses Pay.gov for processing all credit cards transactions. Pay.gov provides an encryption service that ensures private, secure transactions for customers who submit electronic orders by credit card through the online ordering process and shopping cart.

Pricing and Availability

Most of our print publications are free to U.S. consumers via the U.S. Postal Service or UPS. Where there is a charge, the cost is set or determined by the publishing organization or the Government Printing Office. Cost information can be found on the publication details page.

Out-of-Stock Items
In the event a publication is out of stock, we will tell you. In most cases, you will be able to download an electronic copy to your computer, laptop or other personal electronic device for printing.

Downloading Electronic Publications
You may need special software to view content and download electronic publications from this and other government websites. See Free Commercial Downloads for links to software you will need to view and download publications in PDF,EPUB, Mobi and RSS formats.

Groups and individuals who wish to receive free copies of the Consumer Information Catalog each quarter may subscribe online. All changes will be effective with the next available Catalog edition

Shipping and Delivery

Some orders may be split and shipped from more than one fulfillment location. The majority of the print publications available for ordering on Publications.USA.gov are shipped from FCIC's distribution center in Pueblo, Colorado. However, some publishing agencies prefer to ship directly from their own distribution centers.

All orders for print publications are shipped by the U.S. Postal Service or UPS. Your publications should arrive within 2 to 4 weeks of placing your order. If you have not received your order after 4 weeks, you can call our customer service number at 1-719-295-2675 or e-mail us to check on your order. Please have the tracking number and the date you placed your order available. This phone number is only for checking on your order. All orders are taken online; no phone orders will be accepted.
