Improving Patient Safety Systems for Patients with Limited English Proficiency: A Guide for Hospitals
This guide focuses on how hospitals can better identify, report, monitor and prevent medical errors in patients with Limited English Proficiency. Along with its companion training module, TeamSTEPPS® Enhancing Safety for Patients With Limited English Proficiency Module, this resource teaches a set of team behaviors and structured communication tools designed to reduce medical errors for LEP patients. The guide provides activities that can be immediately integrated into a broader set of patient safety activities. Built on solid research and well-tested patient safety methodology, these tools provide the case for why this field is important, as well as the basic strategies necessary to build safety systems that truly protect all patients. |

TeamSTEPPS® Enhancing Safety for Patients with Limited English Proficiency Module
The TeamSTEPPS Limited English Proficiency module is designed to help develop and deploy a customized plan to train staff in teamwork skills and lead a medical teamwork improvement initiative from initial concept development to sustainment of positive changes. This evidence-based module is designed to provide insight into the core concepts of teamwork as they are applied to work with patients who have difficulty communicating in English. Comprehensive curricula and instructional guides include short case studies and videos illustrating teamwork opportunities and successes. |

Health Resources and Services Administration Study On Measuring Cultural Competence in Health Care Delivery Settings [PDF | 85KB]
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is sponsoring a project to develop a cultural competence measurement profile comprising a conceptual measurement framework and set of measures for gauging cultural competence in health care settings. HRSA has contracted The Lewin Group to conduct this work. The goal of this effort is to contribute to an understanding of how the complex construct of cultural competence can be measured and advance the capacity of organizations to carry out such measurement. |

Making the Business Case for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health Care
On May 1, 2007, The Alliance of Community Health Plans Foundation released the final report and 13 case studies on which the report is based for the project Making the Business Case for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health Care. The findings included in the final report are based on information developed about business benefits achieved by different kinds of health care organizations that implemented projects addressing one or more of the National CLAS Standards published by OMH in 2000. |
