Agriculture and Food Research Initiative - Foundational Program - Food Safety, Nutrition, and Health

Human health is significantly affected by the safety, quality, and nutritive value of foods consumed. This program addresses microbial, physical, and chemical contamination of foods; nutritional quality and links between food and health; bioavailability of nutrients; postharvest practices; and improved food processing technologies. Knowledge generated from this program will be useful in enhancing the microbial, physical, and chemical safety of foods by preventing and mitigating contamination; formulating science based foods for health; providing evidence about the bioavailability of nutrients and bioactive components in foods, and improving processing, packaging and storage technologies to enhance the quality and shelf life of foods. Single-function Research Projects and Food and Agricultural Science Enhancement (FASE) Grants are expected to address one of the Program Area Priorities of the Food Safety, Nutrition, and Health area (see Foundational Program RFA for details).
