Subject: IC Directors' Meeting Highlights — June 7, 2012

Announcements: Dr. Collins provided a brief update on the recent Target Validation meeting held in Boston. There is good momentum in this area and this topic will be discussed further at a future IC Directors’ meeting.

ACD Working Group Preview – Biomedical Workforce: Sally Rockey

Dr. Rockey provided background on the Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) Working Group on the Biomedical Workforce in anticipation of the working group’s upcoming report to the ACD. The Working Group, co-chaired by Dr. Rockey and Dr. Shirley Tilghman (Princeton), was asked to recommend actions to the ACD to ensure a diverse and sustainable biomedical and behavioral research workforce. The working group, together with a modeling sub-committee composed mainly of labor economists, defined the major issues facing the biomedical research workforce, gathered data on the current workforce, heard from multiple stakeholders, and solicited input on the major issues from the public through a Request for Information. The working group will report on its recommendations on June 14, 2012.

ACD Working Group Preview – Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce: Larry Tabak

Dr. Tabak provided background on the Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) Working Group on Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce in anticipation of the working group’s upcoming report to the ACD. The Working Group, co-chaired by Dr. Tabak, Dr. Reed Tuckson (UnitedHealth), and Dr. John Ruffin (NIH/NIMHD), was charged to provide concrete recommendations to the NIH Director on ways to improve the retention of underrepresented minorities (URMS), persons with disabilities, and persons from disadvantaged backgrounds through key transition points in the research career. The working group gathered and analyzed a large amount of data, heard from multiple stakeholders through a public meeting and a Request for Information and defined the major issues facing URMs in the biomedical research workforce. The working group will report on its recommendations to the ACD on June 14, 2012.

ACD Working Group Preview – Data and Informatics: Larry Tabak

Dr. Tabak provided background on the Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) Working Group on Data and Informatics in anticipation of the working group’s upcoming report to the ACD. The Working Group, co-chaired by Dr. Tabak and Dr. David DeMets (University of Wisconsin-Madison), was charged to provide the ACD and NIH Director with expert advice on management, integration, and analysis of large biomedical datasets. The working group addressed the following areas: research and administrative data; training needs; and management of information technology at NIH, and solicited input on the major issues from the public through a Request for Information. The working group will report on its recommendations to the ACD on June 15, 2012.
