Sean Altekruse is a Captain in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and an epidemiologist in the Data Analysis and Interpretation Branch (DAIB) of the Surveillance Research Program (SRP). His research interests include childhood cancers, cancer health disparities, the role of infectious agents in cancer, and relationships between tumor biomarkers and prognosis.

Dr. Altekruse received a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia in 1987, a Master of Public Health degree from the University of South Carolina in 1988, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Medical Sciences, jointly awarded by the University of Maryland at College Park and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 2001. He is Board-Certified by the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine in both preventive medicine and epidemiology.

Dr. Altekruse has published 70 peer-reviewed articles and 10 book chapters and is a co-editor of the SEER Cancer Statistics Review and the Cancer Trends Progress Report. He coordinates SEER's Residual Tissue Repository and the SEER-National Longitudinal Mortality Study. He has previously served in assignments with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and NCI's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics.
