NIGMS funds academic research and training programs in anesthesiology and perioperative pain. The research aims to improve understanding of the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms of anesthesia, the pharmacology of anesthetics, the effects of anesthetics on integrated organ systems and surgical and perioperative pain. The Institute also supports studies that translate basic research observations and principles related to anesthesia into the clinical arena. NIGMS supports the training and career development of anesthesiologists interested in basic and clinical anesthesia research.
