Dietary Screener in the 2010 NHIS Cancer Control Supplement (CCS)
A new dietary screener was administered in the 2010 NHIS Cancer Control Supplement
(CCS). This screener does not attempt to assess total diet. The screener may be useful to
assess approximate intakes of fruits and vegetables, fiber, whole grains, added sugars,
calcium, and dairy foods. The screener asks respondents to report how frequently they
consume foods in 23 categories. A single question about red meat and a single question
about processed meat are also asked. The screener asks separate questions about the type
of cereal consumed, type of milk consumed, and use of low-fat cheeses. No portion size
questions are asked.
The questions for the screener are nearly identical to those asked in the NHANES 2009-10
screener.
Scoring algorithms will be developed and made available.
