DMREF Submissions to CMMI in FY 2013

CMMI is once again accepting proposals in 2013 for the NSF-wide activity Designing Materials to Revolutionize and Engineer our Future (DMREF). DMREF is part of NSF's second year of a national materials initiative entitled the Materials Genome Initiative for Global Competitiveness (MGI). (http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/microsites/ostp/materials_genome_initiative-final.pdf) MGI recognizes the importance of materials science to the well-being and advancement of society and aims to "deploy advanced materials at least twice as fast as possible today, at a fraction of the cost." The MGI national initiative integrates all components in the continuum of materials design, including materials discovery, development, property optimization, systems design and optimization, certification, manufacturing, and deployment, with each employing the toolset that is being developed within the materials innovation infrastructure. The toolset will integrate synergistically advanced computational methods with data-enabled scientific discovery and innovative experimental techniques in such a manner as to revolutionize the approach to materials research and engineering.

DMREF comprises well-coordinated activities involving the Directorates of Engineering, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and Computer & Information Science and Engineering. For further details and participating divisions please see the broadly aimed Dear Colleague Letter about DMREF in fiscal year 2013, posted on the NSF web page, NSF 13-025. As described in that Letter, success in the initiative requires a collaborative, synergistic, iterative approach that includes theory, computation, and experiments. This approach is the central principle of MGI. Consequently DMREF proposals may be reviewed jointly with divisions other than the one to which the proposal is submitted. Commonality of aims, of MGI principles, and of submission dates will facilitate joint review where appropriate. This is intended to make it easier for different disciplines to join in achieving the aims of MGI.

DMREF proposals submitted to CMMI must:

  • be submitted within the window 15 January - 15 February 2013, inclusive;
  • be submitted to the Design of Engineering Material Systems (PD 12-8086) program;
  • deal with problems in the range of issues described in the DMREF Dear Colleague letter, NSF 13-025
  • seek new mathematical or statistical results that will advance the DMREF agenda;
  • describe a research plan that meets the central Materials Genome Initiative principle of closely coupled, iterative interplay among theory, computation, and experimental approaches;
  • have a title that begins with the word "DMREF:".

Interdisciplinary Research (IDR)

The Directorate for Engineering (ENG) welcomes the submission of transformative, interdisciplinary research proposals. Many ENG programs fund interdisciplinary proposals.  ENG participates in the NSF-wide CREATIV mechanism, designed for unusually creative high-risk/high-reward interdisciplinary proposals

2012 CMMI Research & Innovation Conference

The Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) of the National Science Foundation (NSF) is pleased to announce that the 2012 NSF CMMI Research and Innovation Conference will take place in Boston, MA during July 9-12, 2012. The theme of the conference is "Engineering Transformation through Partnerships". The goal of the conference is to highlight the innovative and transformative research presently funded in CMMI; to provide researchers the opportunity to network and form collaborations; and to learn about new and upcoming funding opportunities within CMMI, across NSF, and within partner agencies. This conference will be held along with the 2012 George E. Brown Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) Annual Meeting.

G8 Research Councils Multilateral Funding Opp

The National Science Foundation Directorate for Engineering and Office of International Science and Engineering are partnering with six of the other G8 Research Councils in announcing the Second Call of the G8 Multilateral Funding Initiative.  This joint call for proposals for the "Interdisciplinary Program on Material Efficiency - A first step towards sustainable manufacturing" is issued by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science which is serving as the Call Secretariat and will maintain the official website at http://www.jsps.go.jp/j-bottom/g8-initiative.html .    

U.S. academic institutions are eligible to submit preliminary proposals in response to the Dear Colleague letter.   The preliminary proposals, due on September 30, 2011, require collaborative research projects that are comprised of researchers from at least three of the partner countries - Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.  Information specific to U.S. researchers is posted at www.nsf.gov/od/oise/g8initiative/

CMMI Overview

The Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) Division is one of the four research divisions in the Directorate for Engineering at the National Science Foundation. Its mission is to fund fundamental research and education in support of the Foundation’s strategic goals directed at advances in the disciplines of civil, mechanical, industrial and manufacturing engineering, and materials design. In addition, the Division has a focus on the reduction of risks and damage resulting from earthquakes and other natural and technological hazards. The Division encourages cross-disciplinary research partnerships at the intersections of traditional disciplines to promote transformative advances in civil, mechanical and industrial systems and manufacturing technologies. It also encourages discovery enabled by the use of cross-cutting technologies such as adaptive systems, nanotechnology, and simulation. The integration of research and education is supported across all programs of the Division.

The CMMI Division is organized into four program clusters, each containing four to six research programs:

Advanced Manufacturing
Mechanics and Engineering Materials
Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructures
Systems Engineering and Design

CMMI also accepts interdisciplinary proposals on nanotechnology topics from teams of researchers. Should you have questions, please contact the director of the programs closest to the primary area of research. The deadlines, preparation, and review criteria follow the same rules as regular proposals. PIs of such proposals are strongly encouraged to contact the director of the primary program area prior to preparing such a proposal.

CMMI Unsolicited Proposal Submission Windows

All unsolicited proposals directed to CMMI must be submitted during one of two annual unsolicited proposal submission windows, January 15 through February 15 and September 1 through October 1.  Each of these windows opens at 12:01 AM on the first day of the window, and closes at 5 PM submitter's local time on the last day of the window.  In the event that the last day of the window is a Saturday or Sunday, the window closes at 5 PM submitter's local time on the following Monday.  Unsolicited proposals submitted at any other time will be returned without review.  For proposals submitted under special announcements or solicitations, please refer to the deadline dates specified in the appropriate announcement or solicitation.
