Barry Portnoy, Ph.D.

Senior Advisor for Disease Prevention

Dr. Portnoy’s current responsibilities include coordinating and stimulating collaborative prevention research projects across the NIH. He serves as the NIH liaison to the Task Force on Community Preventive Services and the United States Preventive Services Task Force. Prior to joining ODP, Dr. Portnoy was with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Division of Cancer Prevention. He also served as the NCI coordinator for the Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2000 and 2010 Objectives. He serves on a number of trans-NIH committees such as the OppNet Steering Committee for Basic Behavioral and Social Sciences, the NIH Prevention Coordinators Committee and the NIH Nutrition Coordinating Committee. He has held academic appointments at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland. He also served as an evaluation consultant to the National High Blood Pressure Education Program, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, and the Department of Education. He holds a doctoral degree in public health education. His research interests include the design and evaluation of chronic disease prevention and control interventions.
