NCEA Training Library
For Adult Protective Services and Elder Abuse

Background

The National Training Library for Adult Protective Services (APS) and Elder Abuse is an ongoing project of the National Center on Elder Abuse in which training materials from around the country are collected and organized for loan and referral.  The Library was developed to address the needs of state APS programs reporting a wide range of unmet training needs, from basic interviewing skills to ethical dilemmas and decision-making.  Although it was known that a number of training materials existed, the materials were scattered across the country and it was often difficult to obtain copies of the materials.

In response to the needs of APS agencies and others for training materials on elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation, the NCEA developed this national resource library.  The National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA) is the NCEA grantee who administers and maintains the National Training Library for APS and Elder Abuse.  The goals of the Training Library include

  • Identifying existing training materials,
  • Providing standardized descriptions,
  • Making training materials available to trainers, and
  • Documenting gaps in existing training resources.

As background in developing this Library, the NCEA conducted a review of state APS training programs.  You may read the report by clicking the title: “Report on State Adult Protective Services Training Programs”.

To identify research and scholarly literature on APS and related issues, you may view/download the annotated bibliography: Adult Protective Services (APS) and Elder Abuse (December 2007).

How To Access Materials And Technical Assistance

Training Library Inventory

NAPSA provides technical assistance to library users both on what is available through the library and on how to select the right materials to meet the user's particular needs. Most of the library’s materials are now available for downloading. NAPSA also assists by making referrals to other sources. The library adds materials on an ongoing basis, so please check back for additional listings. Each library technical assistance request is handled on a first-come, first-served basis. NAPSA makes every effort to meet each requestor's needs, but occasionally is not able to do so.

To request assistance in utilizing the National Training Library for APS and Elder Abuse, please email info@apsnetwork.org, and provide:

  • Your complete name, agency and contact information;
  • The training topic and the type of audience you wish to train;
  • If not apparent, your profession and the profession for which you are developing training;
  • The nature of the training (in-service and ongoing; one time only workshop; length; format [e.g. web based]; basic or advanced, etc.);
  • Your timeframe for developing the training;
  • Any other information that will help NAPSA to assist you.

Please Help The Library Grow

If you have developed, or are aware of, a training on elder abuse and/or APS which is not currently in the National Training Library, NCEA and NAPSA would greatly appreciate your letting us know so that we can attempt to add it to the library's holdings for others to learn from and use.

NCEA and NAPSA recognize that many materials have been developed with limited resources that affect their quality and/or completeness. However, no matter how simple or modest the product, it may be valuable to someone else.

Any APS, Aging Services, medical, criminal justice, legal, financial or other professional who has documents, videos, PowerPoint presentations, or other training information relevant to elder abuse and Adult Protective Services is encouraged to send an electronic copy to:

In order to be added to the library, NAPSA must obtain authorization to do so from curriculum's author(s)/owner(s). If at all possible, please send the file with a permission-to-use form completed or authorized by the appropriate persons or entities.  Receipt of all materials will be acknowledged.
