HPC Experimental Products



These experimental products, produced by the HPC, are made available for evaluation purposes only. They are intended to be a demonstration of the types of products that the HPC may produce in the future, if there is a need for them. They are NOT official NWS products. We will do our best to make these products available on a regular basis, but, as experimental products, they may not always be available.




  • 6-Hourly QPFs for Days 4-5 --  On January 7, 2011, HPC began creating experimental QPFs for the day 4-5 period in 6 hour intervals. (The current operational product for Days 4-5 is a 48-hour total QPF.) For information regarding this new forecast guidance, please review the official Product Description Document.

  • 24-Hour Probabilistic Winter Precipitation Guidance --  On November 23, 2010, HPC added to its current suite of winter weather products experimental 24-hour probabilistic snow and freezing rain accumulation guidance for the Day 1-3 period. For information regarding the development of these forecasts, please review our product description page.
  • Today's National Forecast in Spanish --  Note: As of March 1, 2011, this product became operational. To view, please visit our Daily National Forecast page or access the Spanish version directly. For information regarding this product, please read the official Product Description Document

  • 6-Hour Probabilistic QPFs --  On April 19, 2010, HPC added to its product suite 6-hour probabilistic QPFs for the day 1-3 forecast period.  The new products include probability of precipitation forecasts of at least a specified amount and forecasts of precipitation amount by percentile. Please note that as of April 6, 2011, the PQPF products became operational. For additional information regarding these forecasts, please visit our PQPF product description page.
  • 24-Hour Observed Precipitation Chart   -- HPC has introduced a graphic that displays daily 24-hour observed precipitation amounts over the contiguous U.S.  Precipitation accumulations are valid at 1200 UTC each day and consist of observations collected by NWS Weather Forecast Offices and River Forecast Centers (RFCs).   These data are collected and processed by NCEP's Climate Prediction Center (CPC), then made available to HPC. This page contains an archive of charts from May 4, 2008, to the present.   This product became operational on June 1, 2009.
