Laos

Laos’ growing regional importance is reflected by its location—bordering China, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand—its membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and its position on the Mekong River. 

The largest part of U.S. bilateral assistance to Laos is devoted to improving health. As part of its regional health program, USAID supports activities in Laos to reduce the incidence of infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and dengue fever; and of pandemic threats like avian influenza.  

As the country transitions to open and free markets, USAID is helping improve economic policy in Laos. We provide assistance in drafting a broad range of key laws and regulations while providing analysis based on international best practices in trade agreements. In addition, USAID supports workshops to raise awareness among the public about commitments by Laos to comply with international obligations. 

Working with the Government of Laos, in collaboration with other countries in the region, USAID is promoting responsible timber trade and the sustainable management of forest resources. USAID programs promote biodiversity conservation and combat illegal wildlife trafficking. The Agency also works to expand access to safe water and sanitation in rural areas.
