President Obama asks bioethics commission to review protections for human research subjects

In response to the recent discovery of the U.S. Public Health Service Sexually Transmitted Diseases Inoculation Study, President Obama asked the Commission to review human subjects protection to "determine if Federal regulations and international standards adequately guard the health and well-being of participants in scientific studies supported by the Federal Government."

The President also asked that the Commission conduct an investigation into the specifics of the U.S. Public Health Service study.

The Commission will begin this work in January 2011 and report its findings and recommendations at the end of the year.
