Recruitment & Training Program for Under-represented Populations

The Intramural Research Program(IRP) is the in-house research program of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is located on the Johns Hopkins Bayview Campus, Baltimore, Maryland.  For nearly 60 years, NIDA has been the primary source of scientific knowledge concerning addiction and has served as a training facility for researchers with an interest in drug abuse research.  The Recruitment & Training Program for Under-represented Populations is an intramural program that provides training opportunities for students who are interested in the scientific basis of drug abuse.  A limited number of positions are available each summer.  Selection is very competitive.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. You must be a student from an under-represented group who is currently enrolled in or has been accepted into an accredited high school, college, graduate or medical school pursuing a certificate, diploma and in good academic standing. Women and persons with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

  2. You must be at least 16 years old.

  3. You must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or have appropriate work authorization.

Duration of Program

The Recruitment & Training Program for Under-represented Populations lasts 8 weeks. Students are expected to work full-time; part-time schedules are not permitted. Possible scheduling conflicts are to be discussed before arrival.

How to Apply

Students who wish to apply for the Recruitment & Training Program for Under-represented Populations should submit the following documents for consideration:

  • Completed federal resumé - see format below
  • Completed program application - Download and fill out: Microsoft Word [156K]
  • Statement describing future academic plans, interest in biomedical sciences and reasons for seeking a summer position.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • An official transcript of courses and grade point average (with official seal).
  • An official letter from your school verifying that you are a student in good standing enrolled at least half-time (with official seal).
  • Verification of citizenship (This can be a xeroxed copy of the following: visa, driver's license, original social security card, birth certificate).
  • Official copies of all degrees (high school, college, graduate)
  • DEADLINE: Completed packets are due in entirety March 1 of each year.

  • Students will be informed of acceptance or rejection in April (ending of the month). Specific reasons for acceptance or rejection will not be given.
  • Housing and travel arrangements are not provided.
