The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) collects information on violent crimes against persons in the workplace. Workplace violence is defined as nonfatal violence (rape/sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated and simple assault) against employed persons age 16 or older that occurred while they were at work or on duty. Attempts are included with completed victimizations.

Summary findings

From 2005 to 2009 —

  • Law enforcement officers, security guards, and bartenders had the highest rates of nonfatal workplace violence.
     
  • Workplace violence accounted for 15% of nonfatal violent crime against persons age 16 or older.
     
  • Strangers committed the greatest proportion of nonfatal workplace violence against males (53%) and females (41%).
     
  • Among workplace homicides, about 28% involved victims with sales and related occupations and about 17% involved victims in protective service occupations.
