Recognizing the Importance and Value of Public Input
You may have noticed, over the past year SAMHSA has been making an effort to solicit feedback from interested constituents on a variety of topics. This has not only been done in support of the President’s #OpenGov Directive, but also with the understanding the more input received and considered, the better the outcome will be.

To-date, the input solicited has been very focused on mission-related activities such as SAMHSA’s Strategic Initiatives and developing a working definition of “recovery”.

Lights! Camera! Action! The 2011 Voice Awards—to be hosted by NBC’s “Parenthood” star and Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Peter Krause—is set to take place on Wednesday, August 24, at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
Since 2005, the Voice Awards have honored writers and producers who champion people with behavioral health problems through dignified, respectful, and accurate portrayals of these individuals in television and film. This year’s nominees include “The Fighter,” “The King’s Speech,” FOX’s “Glee,” NBC’s “Harry’s Law,” ABC’s “Private Practice,” and HBO’s “Treme.”

Listening for Change

Listening for Change was the theme of last week’s National Conference on Health Communication, Marketing, and Media* in Atlanta.  The event drew over 1,000 attendees from across the country to discuss health communications and how areas such as social media, design thinking and transmedia storytelling are transforming the health communications landscape.

Recovery Defined – Give Us Your Feedback

Over the past year, SAMHSA – as part of its Recovery Support Strategic Initiative – has worked with the behavioral health field to develop a working definition of recovery that captures the essential, common experiences of those recovering from mental and substance use disorders, along with 10 guiding principles that support recovery.

Behavioral Health @ National Conference on Health Communications, Marketing and Media

This year at the 5th National Conference on Health Communications, Marketing and Media, the visibility of behavioral health is higher than ever before.  Not only is SAMHSA the co-chair of this year’s conference but there are multiple sessions discussing behavioral health communications.
This year’s conference theme – Listening for Change – frames the dialogue that SAMHSA is creating with the public.  This dialogue, fueled by the revolution in health communications technology, is making citizen engagement the foundation for improving health and wellbeing.
