In today’s dialogue about integrative medicine, healthcare reform, and reducing medical costs, behavioral health is essential to health. Approximately 11 million U.S. adults (4.8 percent) had a serious mental illness (SMI) in 2009. During the 2001-2004 period, one out of eight U.S. children aged 8 to 15 (or 13.1 percent) had a mental health disorder in the past year.
