A call for the equal treatment of all illnesses and conversation on the path to recovery

There’s a statue at the entrance to the Italian embassy’s auditorium.  I say statue, but as tastefully pointed out by an elegant plaque, it is in fact a “Marble Fragment of Statue, Syracuse, 3rd Century B.C.”  Headless and heartless, it’s really only a pair of legs, but it still pulls off a certain elegant refinement (this is the Italian embassy after all!).

How to get more out of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health

A recently released NSDUH Report on state-level underage alcohol use and self-purchase of alcohol showed that rates varied somewhat from state to state.

National Survivors of Suicide Day; November 17th, 2012

 Each year we observe the Saturday before Thanksgiving as National Survivors of Suicide Day. The observance is meant to call the friends and family of those who have committed suicide together to share stories and find strength in each other. Sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), it was founded by Senator Harry Reid in 1999 after he lost his father to suicide.

A recent SAMHSA report indicates that adolescent cigarette use nationwide declined significantly over the past decade.  However, smoking remains the nation’s leading cause of preventable death, responsible for an estimated 443,000 American deaths each year, with 50,000 of these deaths from exposure to secondhand smoke.  One in eleven adolescents in the U.S. report smoking in the past month.
