Secretary Rice Expresses Condolences to the People of India
Secretary Rice (Dec. 3): "I wish to start by just underscoring what President Bush has said a couple of days ago, and that is that the United States of America wants to express its deepest condolences to the people of India and particularly to the people of Mumbai. The United States stands in solidarity with India in meeting this challenge and this testing and terrible time. ...And so we have to act with urgency, we have to act with resolve. Secretary Condoleezza Rice traveled to London, Brussels, New DelhiPakistan and Copenhagen from November 30 to December 5.

In London, Secretary Rice met with Foreign Secretary David Miliband. She then traveled to Brussels to participate in the annual formal meeting of NATO foreign ministers on December 2.

President Bush asked Secretary Rice to travel to India this week in the wake of the terror attacks that killed nearly 200 people, including 6 American citizens. She attended the NATO meeting on Tuesday, and then went to India, arriving in New Dehli on Wednesday.

Secretary Rice's visit to India is a further demonstration of the United States' commitment to stand in solidarity with the people of India as we all work together to hold these extremists accountable.

After the NATO Ministerial and India visit, the Secretary traveled to Pakistan to discuss the response with the Pakistani Government.

The Secretary’s final stop was Copenhagen where she had meetings with Prime Minister Anders Rasmussen and Foreign Minister Per Stig Moller.
