  6. If prompted to scan your computer, click on the Install button
  7. From the Install options window, leave all items checked & click on the Install button
  8. Virex will search for previous installations of Virex & if installed will update the older version. This may take a few minutes to complete.
  9. Once the installation is complete, click on the Quit button in the completion prompt dialog box.
  10. You will then be prompted to restart your computer. Click on the OK button to close the prompt.
  11. Restart the computer by selecting Restart from the Special menu.

Configuration:

  1. After restarting, open the Virex folder that was created on your hard drive.
  2. Double click on Virex.
  3. Click on the Preferences button in the Virex toolbar or select Preferences from the Edit menu. From the Preferences dialog box, scroll down and select eUpdate in the left column.
  4. Under Electronic Updating, select TCP/IP FTP. Enter antivirus.nih.gov in the Update Server field and enter /virex in the field Update Folder. Click on Save.

  10. After running eUpdate, make sure the definition files are for the current month by looking at the date that appears on the lower left side of the Virex window.
NOTE: The Virex vendor publishes updates to the definitions as they become available. If there are no updates to the definitions to be made, the vendor will not update the definition file. In this case, the date shown may not be within the current month.
  11. Run a scan by clicking on the Repair button in the toolbar.
  12. Quit Virex.

Cleanup:

After quitting Virex, you may now delete the Virex .smi file from your Desktop (or from your download directory).
