Storage Pricing for Hosted Systems

New Pricing Structure Proposed for FY 2011

In an ongoing effort to provide competitive, high-quality services and be responsive to customer feedback, the Center for Information Technology (CIT) has proposed to restructure its pricing for managed storage for the Windows and Unix hosting services.

Beginning October 1, 2010 (federal fiscal year 2011), disk storage and backup storage will be priced separately, and volume discounts will be available. The table below shows both the proposed FY 2011 and the current FY 2010 rates.

What Will the Changes Mean?

Previously, managed disk storage and backup storage were bundled as a single offering at a single rate with no discounts.

The proposed 2011 pricing structure gives customers more options and flexibility in managing their costs by pricing disk storage and backup storage separately. Also, customers with large amounts of data may be able to take advantage of the volume discounts for disk storage, backup storage, and service-managed storage.

The new pricing structure includes:

  • Standard and Premium categories each with separately-priced options for disk storage and additional SAN (storage area network) provisioning services.

Standard storage services are generally used for mid-tier storage needs while Premium storage services are typically used to support large enterprise-level configurations. In general, Premium storage provides more paths from disk to server and supports higher input/output rates compared to standard storage. Premium storage also offers enhanced support for concurrent maintenance and live firmware updates resulting in less scheduled downtime.
  • Backup storage independent of disk storage services.
  • Volume discounts for both disk storage, backup storage, and service-managed storage. Discounts will apply to the amount of storage above the specified thresholds.

  • Storage area network (SAN) provisioning with initial provisioning included in the server cost.
For additional SAN provisioning, customers are allowed one free provisioning request per server per month. If more frequent provisioning is needed, customers will be charged per request. Rates for SAN provisioning vary depending on whether the provisioning is for standard or premium SAN storage and whether customers require expedited service.
