2009 Influenza Situation Update

Updated CDC FluView for 2009-2010 Influenza Season Week 51 ending December 26, 2009. All data are preliminary and may change as more reports are received.

Influenza and Pneumonia-Associated Hospitalizations and Deaths from August 30 to December 26, 2009 - CDC - Dec 31
Flu activity continued to decline in the United States during the week of December 20 - 26, 2009, as reported in FluView. The number of states reporting widespread flu activity decreased from 7 to 4. Visits to doctors for influenza-like illness, flu-associated hospitalizations, and flu-associated deaths overall are unchanged from the previous week.

Summary of 2009 Monovalent H1N1 Influenza Vaccine Data – Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System - CDC - Dec 31
CDC and FDA provide weekly updates on vaccine safety monitoring activities. The information summarizes adverse event reports to VAERS after the administration of 2009 H1N1 monovalent influenza vaccine.

WHO Updates International H1N1 Situation - WHO- Dec 30
As of 27 December 2009, more than 208 countries and overseas territories or communities have reported laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009, including at least 12,220 deaths.

2009 Influenza Key Points and Messages

(New) One of the many goals for National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is to engage at-risk audiences who are not yet vaccinated, hesitant about vaccination, or unsure about where to get vaccinated. Every year, certain days of NIVW are designated to highlight the importance for these at-risk groups to get vaccinated.
(Updated) As of Thursday morning, December 31, 2009, a cumulative pro rata total of 118,241,100 doses had been made available for ordering since vaccine shipping began.
(Updated) As of Wednesday, December 30, 2009, there were a total of 104,349,800 doses ordered.

2009 H1N1 Influenza Resources for Clinicians

National Influenza Vaccination Week - HHS - Jan 02
National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as foster greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season into January and beyond. This year's NIVW (originally scheduled for December 6-10, 2009) is now rescheduled for January 10-16, 2010. http://www.flu.gov/news/nivw.html

HHS Secretary Sebelius Unveils New H1N1 Advertisement That Will Air During New Year’s College Football Bowl Games - HHS - Dec 31
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a new H1N1 flu vaccination advertisement that will air during four College Football Bowl Games held over the New Year's holiday. The ad is aimed at encouraging young people and all Americans to get vaccinated against the H1N1 flu.

Household Transmission of 2009 Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) Virus in the United States - NEJM - Dec 31
Most people who have 2009 H1N1 influenza are advised to stay home until they have been afebrile for at least 24 hours. This practice puts other household members, who care for the patient when he or she is most infectious, at risk for infection. But so far, neither this risk nor the potential risk factors for transmission has been evaluated in the case of 2009 H1N1 influenza.

The Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) journal provides recognition of new and re-emerging infections and understanding of factors involved in disease emergence, prevention, and elimination. DHHS Continues Investigation into New Hampshire Anthrax Case - NH/DHHS - Dec 28
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Public Health Services (DPHS) continues to investigate the source of the anthrax that infected a woman from Strafford County. While the investigation continues, the United Campus Ministry building located in Durham has been closed until further notice.

Medical Countermeasures Following a Biological Attack - The White House Press Brief - Dec 30
The Secretaries of Health and Human Services and Homeland Security, in coordination with the U.S. Postal Service, shall establish a national U.S. Postal Service medical countermeasures dispensing model for U.S. cities to respond to a large-scale biological attack, with anthrax as the primary threat consideration.
