Rather than illustrating a panorama of the crowd gathered at the East Front of the Capitol, as is often the case in inauguration illustrations, this print is a close-up view of Benjamin Harrison taking the oath of office in 1889. The pouring rain features as prominently as the generously draped bunting and important individuals gathered on the platform. This atmospheric detail is also emphasized in the report on the event, which states that “President Harrison was inaugurated on as wet and miserable a day as Washington has seen for a long time.”
