Aerographer's Mate 3rd Class Michelle Spicer, assigned to the Naval Oceanographic Anti-submarine Warfare Center (NOAC), discusses the capabilities of weather monitoring equipment with students from the Yokosuka Middle School during the first Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) mentorship program event held outside the continental United States. The STEM program offers young people the opportunity to explore possible future careers in various technical fields. Mineman 1st Class Burel Jones, from Boston, assigned to Mine Countermeasures Squadron, Detachment 1, embarked aboard the littoral combat ship USS Independence (LCS 2), and Aerographer's Mate 2nd Class Joshua Washington, from El Paso, Texas, stationed aboard Independence, hammer nails into the roof of a Habitat for Humanity project house. Seven Sailors from Independence volunteered with Habitat for Humanity as part of a community service project to help build houses in the local community.
