Apoptosis Interest Group

The NIH Campus Apoptosis Group (AIG) was founded in 1994 to provide a means of communication for scientists at NIH and the Washington area interested in apoptosis and programmed cell death (PCD). It has recently become recognized that apoptosis or programmed cell death is a basic phenomenon common to many biological systems with relevance to basic issues in neurobiology, immunology, aging, and development, as well as to diseases such as cancer, autoimmunity, and degenerative diseases. Thus interest in apoptosis cuts across traditional biomedical disciplinary lines, and the AIG provides a vehicle for discussion among colleagues who otherwise may have little contact.

The principal AIG activities are monthly meetings on the NIH campus. These meetings are devoted to research seminars on various aspects of apoptosis, presented by AIG members and outside speakers. Other AIG activities include participation in the annual NIH Research Festival in September, and sponsorship of a seminar in the Wednesday afternoon NIH Lecture series.

Organization

The AIG is run by a steering committee comprised of scientists from different disciplines, institutes and appointments. Their prinicpal job is to select speakers for the monthly meetings. The committee consists of:

Joining the AIG email list

The monthly seminars are open to the public and are announced in the NIH Calendar of Events. If you want to receive email notices of AIG seminars and also AIG member queries about apoptosis techniques, reagents, jobs, etc., sign up for our email list by sending an email message to LISTSERV@LIST.NIH.GOV containing the following in the body of the email: SUBSCRIBE AIG-L Your name.  The LISTSERV computer will get your e-mail address from the "From:" address of your e-mail message and put you on the list.  Although the email traffic from this list is modest, if you lose interest you can email the LISTSERV computer with the messsge UNSUBSCRIBE AIG-L.

The steering committee strongly encourages input and comments from AIG members, particularly suggestions regarding speakers.
