Nano-SIG is an NIH Inter-institute Interest Group that brings together diverse multidisciplinary researchers with common research interests in Nanotechnology, Nanoscience and Nanomedicine. The new moderators are Robert Blumenthal of the CCR Nanobiology Program at NCI-Frederick, blumenthalr@mail.nih.gov and Xiaoyuan (Shawn) Chen of the Laboratory of Molecular Imaging and Nanomedicine (LOMIN), NIBIB, shawn.chen@nih.gov.

Nanotechnology refers broadly to a field of applied science and technology whose unifying theme is the control of matter on the atomic and molecular scale, normally 1 to 100 nm, and the fabrication of devices with critical dimensions that lie within that size range.

Nanoscience in Biology/Medicine involves the creation and use of structures, devices and systems that have novel properties and functions because of their small size; research towards a fundamental understanding of biological processes at the nanoscale; the conception and fabrication of devices, that will effectively detect and analyze nanoscale entities of relevance to biomedicine; the development of nanotechnologies and nanostructured materials that will in turn benefit biology and medicine.

Nanomedicine comprises medical imaging, in vitro diagnostics, biosensors and in vivo diagnostics, regenerative medicine, advanced and "smart" medical materials, drug design and targeted delivery, theranostics

We aim to establish lines of communication between multidisciplinary researchers from the various institutes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at the different campuses (Frederick, Baltimore, Research Triangle), and other institutions from the greater Washington, DC area (NIST, NRL, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, Georgetown University, George Washington University, CARB, etc.), discuss issues and become more informed about current and future research in Nanotechnology-Nanomedicine. The Nano-Sig plans a regular monthly seminar series on the Bethesda campus with invited speakers mostly from the local community who will bring their expertise to bear on the various facets Nanotechnology-Nanomedicine.  Brainstorming sessions focused around the talks, discussions, and questions that arise will follow their presentations.

The member’s bulletin board will serve as a venue to post job openings, offer mentoring and career guidance and share the latest techniques and information on Nanotechnology-Nanomedicine.
