Transcription Factors Interest Group

The Transcription Factors Interest Group is concerned with a broad range of topics which relate to the transcriptional control of gene expression. Represented research areas include, but are not limited to, mechanisms of transcriptional activation/repression at the gene level, transcription factor activation, and biologic roles of transcription factors in health and disease.

Groups interested in the mechanism of transcriptional activation/repression at the gene level are concerned with the interactions of promoter/enhancer factors with each other and with the basal transcription machinery, and more general modes of activation/repression.

Research on the activation of transcription factors is divided between the control of factor abundance in response to signals from the cell membrane, the cytoplasm or viral regulators, and mechanisms which affect the function of existing transcription factors (such as post-translational protein modification to activate or repress transcription factor activity).

There is a wide range of studies on the biological functions of transcription factors. Groups exist that are concerned with the role of various transcription factors in determining disease states, including tumorigenic roles associated with altered expression and/or structure of transcription factors. Others are examining the ultimate biological actions of target genes in cell growth, cell death, differentiation and development.
