Briefly:Stephen "Steve" Vogel is an agricultural economist in the Farm and Rural Business Branch of the Resource and Rural Economics Division. His current research is in two broad areas. The first is a new area concerned with farm-community linkages as observed from the farm gate. This research area applies tools and concepts borrowed from regional and development economics to farm-level micro survey data. Current projects include studies on farmers' direct marketing of local foods, rural nonfarm employment linked to off-farm businesses, and internet use affecting farmers' decisions to bypass local communities when purchasing farm inputs.
The second area focus is concerned with the general equilibrium effects farm programs have on factor markets and their policy implications for regional and rural economies. It is a much older area that includes both research and staff analyses using computable general equilibrium modeling- and social accounting matrix modeling frameworks.
As a member of the Farm Income Team, Steve is responsible for data synthesis and product development related to government payments and farm policy.
