The Centre holds a substantial collection of audio-visual materials which are issued on loan to schools
and colleges, and has class sets of various Department of State International Information Programs
publications. A catalog listing these materials is available. The Centre also organizes study days,
conferences and workshops.

displayed in a series of rooms
completely furnished in period style, together with exhibits relating
to Native Americans, the West, maritime history, and other aspects of

The Centre was founded by David and Mary Eccles in 1991. Based at the
British Library - which houses the foremost collection of American
books, manuscripts, journals, newspapers and sound recordings outside
of the United States - the Centre has two broad aims: to promote the
Library's North American materials, and to support American Studies in
schools and universities. To fulfil this first aim, the Centre produces
an on-going series of bibliographical guides to the Library's
collections. These guides are distributed both to academic and major
public libraries in the United Kingdom and to centres of American
Studies throughout the world.
