Searching Law and Regulations Online

This page explains how you can search law and regulations online.

The National Archives and Records Administration publishes the Federal Register and the Code of Federal Regulations. They are the official sources for our regulations.

This highlighted link will take you to the National Archives and Records Administration site where you may search online files of the Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations, and United States Code.

To search these files quickly, you must know the section number of the topic you are looking for. For example, our regulation on the authority of an agency is published in section 511.202 of title 5, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). To find 5 CFR 511.202 online, you would search for 5CFR511.202. The part of the law that explains the basis for grading positions is published in section 5104 of title 5, United States Code (U.S.C.). To find 5 U.S.C. 5104 online, you would search for 5USC5104. Below are the section numbers for the law and our regulations as of January 1, 1999. NOTE: This list of section numbers is not a set of links. You must go to the National Archives and Records Administration web site to search for the specific section you want.
