On October 2, 2009, TRP reissued a funding opportunity for an additional three years that uses the P50 (Specialized Centers) funding mechanism, and is open to all organ-based cancer research.

SPOREs foster highly interactive, translational cancer research based on a unique approach with the following characteristics: a minimum of four translational cancer research projects with a human end-point within the five-year funding period; a team-science (basic and applied) approach in each research project; a pathology/biospecimen specialized resource core; a developmental research program to promote pilot projects or cutting-edge research (basic, clinical or translational); a career development program to promote both the transition of young or established investigators to translational cancer research in the proposed organ site; the requirement for collaboration among other SPOREs and across NCI-funded networks to promote translational advancement; the flexibility to realign resources if translational objectives are not being met during the course of the funding period; and the active advice of patient advocates.
