Health Disparities Seminar Series

October 2010 Seminar Series
The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is pleased to welcome Dr. David Satcher, 16th Surgeon General of the United States and director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine, as the speaker for the October 18, 2010 NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series. This month's seminar will focus on health care reform in the context of mental health disparities.

Dr. Satcher established the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine to combat mental illness and other health problems in health disparity populations. The Institute's flagship programs focus on reducing and ultimately eliminating disparities in mental health. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, creates many opportunities to improve the nation's health especially for the most vulnerable populations that have traditionally lacked access to care including mental health services. Our speaker will discuss benefits and opportunities to improve mental health disorders for all Americans afforded by the new health care reform law, as well as the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008. During his presentation, Dr. Satcher will also explain the importance of research on mental health and describe his role as Morehouse's Poussaint-Satcher-Cosby Chair in Mental Health.
