August 2009 Seminar Series
The theme for the August seminar series is community-based participatory research (CBPR). CBPR works to effectively answer research questions through partnerships between academic investigators and community residents. In a 2003 paper, one of our guest speakers Dr. Barbara Israel described CBPR in public health as an equitable partnership “in which all partners contribute expertise and share decision making and responsibilities.”
CBPR programs have the potential to advance scientific research and provide tangible long-term benefits for communities experiencing health disparities by involving community members as equal partners in all activities aimed at improving their health status. These innovative programs help build trust in groups that historically distrust medical research. The collaborations benefit both parties; with researchers enhancing the knowledge and skills community members use to serve their communities and community members providing invaluable insights and information about their local circumstances to investigators. Community-based participatory research is an important evidenced-based approach which is important in understanding and finding solutions to eliminate health disparities.

Israel, DrPH, MPH, a Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education at the School of Public Health, University of Michigan, and founder of the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center, an organization committed to increasing knowledge and addressing factors associated with health disparities and quality of life for residents in Detroit. Reyes, MPH, Founder and Executive Director of the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation which is a community-based non-profit organization that works to create life changing opportunities for youths and families and reduce violence in Southwest Detroit by creating innovative and culturally appropriate programs and services. Topic:
Community-Based Participatory Research: A Partnership Approach to Address Health Disparities --CBPR emphasizes the equitable involvement of community members, practitioners and researchers in all aspects of the research process. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a definition of CBPR, discuss the rationale for its use to understand and address health disparities, describe the key principles of CBPR and the application of this approach.
