Health Disparities Seminar Series

November 2009 Seminar Series
In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, the theme for the November seminar series is “American Indian/Alaska Native Health Disparities.” American Indians and Alaska Natives experience a disproportionate number of health disparities. For example, according to data from the Indian Health Service, they have a life expectancy nearly six years less than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States.  The age-adjusted mortality rate for American Indian and Alaska Native adults are nearly three times more than that of the national population for death due to accidental injuries and diabetes, four times greater for death due to liver disease, and 50 percent greater for death due to pneumonia, influenza, suicide, and homicide. Infant mortality among AI/AN is 10.4 per 1000 births and exceeds other groups such as Hispanics 5.0, Whites 4.7, and Asian and Pacific Islanders 4.3.

Many researchers and health practitioners around the country are working to improve American Indian and Alaska Native health. The Indian Health Service (IHS) supports the Tribal Epidemiology Centers that serve American Indian and Alaska Native Tribal and urban communities by managing public health information systems, investigating diseases, managing disease prevention and control programs, responding to public health emergencies, and coordinating health activities with other public health organizations. The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) has been a long-time co-sponsor of the IHS’ Tribal Epidemiology Centers and is pleased to have the Director of the Northwest Tribal EpiCenter as the speaker for the November seminar series.  Dr. Victoria Warren-Mears will discuss some of the research projects being undertaken at the Northwest Tribal Epidemiology Center as a model to demonstrate how the scientific and health community collaborate with American Indian Tribes to provide health-related research, surveillance, and training to improve the quality of life of American Indians and Alaska Natives
