Health Disparities Seminar Series

September 2011 Seminar Series
The National Institutes of Health is pleased to welcome Dr. Margarita Alegria as the featured speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on September 15, 2011.

Traditionally, Latinos have been among the millions of Americans who lacked access to medical care due to a lack of health insurance or underinsurance. With passage of the Affordable Care Act and proper implementation of its provisions, millions of Latinos will now have the legal right to health care for the first time. In her presentation, Dr. Alegria will discuss how research on health disparities conducted at the Center for Multicultural Mental Health Research (which she directs) during the past five years can help us understand the challenges and opportunities for Latinos offered by health care reform. She will touch on the issue of migration and the complex challenges it poses for culturally appropriate mental health and substance abuse services. Dr. Alegria will also examine the role of acculturation in mental disorders, the logistics of continuity of care across borders, and the challenges of language and intergenerational conflict. The presentation will integrate examples of the Center's work on psychiatric epidemiology, health services research, intervention research, and community-partnered research to illustrate how research findings can offer a compass in navigating health care reform and "taking new bold steps through bona fide solutions" to eliminate health disparities. A widely recognized expert on the delivery of mental health services to minority communities, Dr. Alegria is also the Principal Investigator of the Advanced Center for Mental Health Disparities, and she directs the Latino arm of the National Latino and Asian American Study. She also serves as the Co-Principal Investigator of the NIMHD Excellence in Partnerships for Community Outreach, Research on Health Disparities and Training (EXPORT) Center, which is jointly administered by the Cambridge Health Alliance and the University of Puerto Rico. Her published work focuses on mental health services research, conceptual and methodological issues with minority populations, risk behaviors, and disparities in service delivery.
