NIH Wellness ... "Taking Our Own Best Advice"

On August 29, 2012, the Office of Research Services, Division of Occupational Health and Safety, in partnership with the Division of Amenities and Transportation Services, will host the first annual NIH Safety, Health & Wellness Day. This event will be held in Building 45 (Natcher Conference Center) from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

All activities are open and FREE to all of NIH.

 

Opening Ceremonies

  • Mater of Ceremonies: Dr. Michael Gottesman, Deputy Director for Intramural Research
  • Opening Remarks: Dr. Lawrence Tabak, Principal Deputy Director, NIH
  • Keynote Speaker: Dr. L Casey Chosewood, Senior Medical Officer for Total Worker Health Programs at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

 

Fitness Assessments - Conference Rooms C1/C2

 Registration will be required in advance for this health screening
Please Note: Only six (6) participants can register for each assessment time.

This 20 minute Fitness Assessment will be conducted by the NIH R&W Fitness program and consist of the following:

  • Push-ups
  • Partial Curl-ups
  • 3-Minute Step Test
  • Sit & Reach

Please plan your schedule accordingly.

  • Wear exercise clothing and shoes for the test.
  • No food for two hours before testing.
  • No caffeinated beverages.
  • No alcohol for 24 hours before testing
  • No smoking for two hours before testing

You will be contacted by one of the fitness center staff after the Expo to set up an appointment to find out your results. Your blood pressure, body fat percentage and body mass index will also be determined at this appointment.

Health Screenings - Conference Rooms G1/G2

Blood Pressure

No registration will be required for this health screening - first come first served

Provided by the Division of Occupational Health and Safety, Occupational Medical Service (DOHS/OMS). The only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure checked. Your doctor or another qualified health professional should check it at least once every two years and more often if it's high.

 

Bone Density/Osteoporosis

No registration will be required for this health screening  - first come first served

Provided by Suburban Hospital Community Health & Wellness Department, a quick and easy heel test to measure the bone mass density to estimate your risk of developing osteoporosis.

 

Derma Scan Screening

No registration will be required for this health screening  - first come first served

This ultraviolet screening shows skin damage that is invisible to the naked eye. Derma scans will tell you if there is any damage or premature aging of the skin due to sun exposure. Screening results are provided in real time.

 

Glaucoma Screening

Registration will be required in advance for this health screening

Provided by the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington. A visual field test to evaluate peripheral vision in each eye since glaucoma affects an individual's side vision first, and often the individual does not realize the loss. The "puff" test which measures eye pressure will not be performed. Individuals can take the screening with glasses and/or contact lenses.

Seated Massages - Lower Level

No registration will be required - first come first served

Seated massage focuses primarily on the muscles used most during the work day including those of the head, neck, shoulders, back, arms and hands. Seated massages will be provided by Terrel Hale from Georgetown Sports Massage.

 
 

Fitness Classes - Conference Room E1/E2

Cardio Kickboxing with Katya (11:30am - 12:00pm)

Designed to introduce technique and basic movements such as jabs, crosses, and kicks. Great for the new participant or those looking for a quick and effective workout.

R.A.D. Self Defense - Conference Room B

Registration will be required in advance for this activity.
Please Note: Only twenty (20) participants can register for each activity time.

Presented by PO4 Sabrina Pirtle, Community Services Officer Maryland National Capitol Park Police, the R.A.D Basic physical self-defense course provides a 30 minute lecture, instruction and self-defense techniques suitable for all women of all ages or abilities. Register now for this most worthwhile demonstration and training session. Classes are every half hour.
