Description of Activities

Community Health Clinic: A full-service rheumatology clinic dedicated to outreach to underserved patients with rheumatic diseases. Fellows see new referrals and follow a cohort of patients for up to two years.

Pediatric Clinic: Weekly clinic at the NIH Clinical Center where patients with pediatric rheumatic diseases in NIH natural history and interventional research protocols are seen under the guidance of experienced pediatric rheumatologists.

Attending Rounds: Weekly working rounds led by the consult attending and fellow where current inpatients and active outpatients are discussed, followed by physical exam rounds on selected inpatients.

Immunology Lectures: Lectures on selected topics in immunology given to a combined group of Rheumatology, Allergy/Immunology, and Infectious Disease fellows. Lectures are given by senior NIH faculty members from the basic science and clinical faculty and invited guest speakers.

NIH Rheumatology Clinic: Weekly clinic where fellows see adult patients in NIH natural history and interventional research protocols. Fellows screen patients for new studies, care for patients in active clinical protocols, and consult with colleagues about patients referred from other clinical studies at the NIH. Fellows work directly with the principal investigators of the patients in active research protocols and follow patients longitudinally during their time at the NIH.

Didactics: Lectures and interactive sessions on topics in rheumatology selected by the training directors and fellows. A radiology case conference with an experienced musculoskeletal radiologist is held monthly at this time.

Rheumatology Grand Rounds: Formal case presentations by first or second year fellows, often with participation by other services at the Clinical Center involved with care of particularly interesting or complex patients. Local or hospitalized patients are often invited to be present. Senior fellows and Scholars also present their research annually in Grand Rounds.

Translational Journal Club: An interdisciplinary journal club bringing together clinical fellows and staff, faculty, and students and post-doctoral fellows in the labs performing research related to rheumatology at the NIH. A recently published paper from either basic or clinical science is presented, and the clinical implications of basic research findings or vice-versa are discussed.
