NIH Research Community and Resources

Overview

The NIH is home to more than 1,000 laboratories spanning the spectrum from basic to clinical research in the Intramural Research Program on the main NIH campus in Bethesda or satellite campuses which are mostly in the Washington D.C./Baltimore area. The Intramural Research Program homepage provides a portal for exploring the research taking place at the NIH. Most of the Institutes at the NIH have laboratory programs, and listings of faculty and research programs in each of these Institutes can be found here.

Training and Education

In addition to the laboratory experience, the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education sponsors numerous seminars and workshops on careers, scientific and grant writing, and work-life balance. The NIAMS Career Development and Outreach Branch also provides internal training workshops and teaching opportunities.

The Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES) provides numerous support services for NIH trainees and also offers a wide variety of graduate-level courses, mainly in the evenings, suited to the needs of rheumatology trainees, particularly in immunology.

The NIH Clinical Center provides coursework and workshops for clinical research training, including the NIH-Duke Program in Clinical Research, an evening course on the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research, and the Principles of Clinical Pharmacology.

An important benefit of training at the NIH is the Loan Repayment Program. As a resident or clinical fellow enrolled in an ACGME-accredited training program at the NIH, you can apply to receive loan repayment for up to $20,000 per year of your qualified educational debt, or you may qualify for the "Competitive Loan Repayment Program" that could repay as much as $35,000 per year. Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their electronic application upon acceptance into an ACGME-accredited training program.
