Research Funding

NIDA supports research on the biomedical and behavioral causes, consequences, prevention, and treatment of drug abuse and addiction. Learn how research is supported by reading the Introduction to Funding.

Although some international researchers receive NIDA support through a direct foreign grant, most international research is supported through a domestic grant with a foreign component, where a principal investigator from a U.S. institution works with a researcher from another country.

NOTE:
ALL NIDA and National Institutes of Health grant applications must be submitted electronically. Visit Submit Your Grant Application for details.

Find a Research Partner

Form collaborations to enhance national, regional, and international research efforts to address drug abuse and addiction. Use these tools to locate potential research partners within the United States and around the world.

  • NIDA International Drug Abuse Research Abstract Database
A searchable database of research abstracts presented at NIDA International Program meetings by scientists from around the globe working on drug abuse and addiction research.
  • NIH RePORTER
A searchable repository of NIH-funded research projects. Locate investigators, access publications, and review details such as project history, abstract, funding levels, results, or related clinical studies.
  • Fellows World Map
NIDA International fellows are trained in U.S. research methods and prepared to collaborate with drug abuse scientists from around the world. Click on the push pins within a country to find the names of individual fellows and links to their journal articles indexed in PubMed, which is a service of the NIH National Library of Medicine.

Grant-Writing Tools

Learn how to coordinate the planning, research, writing, and packaging of your grant proposals, and how to use concise and persuasive writing to convey how your research matches the goals and objectives of a funding opportunity.

  • Grant Writing
Provides guidance in developing a strong application that allows reviewers to better evaluate the science and merit of the application.
  • The Research Assistant
Provides research support through a grant-writing tutorial, databases, statistical support, anecdotes from seasoned researchers, and links to other searchable Web sites.

Researcher Honors

Several awards recognize outstanding contributions in international drug abuse and addiction research. Available to young scholars and seasoned scientists, the awards are given to researchers who have demonstrated exceptional and sustained support in the area of drug abuse and addiction research. Learn how to nominate a researcher and read about past awardees.

Funding Sources

Funding opportunities are available to conduct rigorous, collaborative, research projects to address drug abuse and addiction, from basic science to clinical practice. Learn about sources geared specifically to the international research community, including specific eligibility and application requirements and deadlines.

Research Priorities

International research supported by NIDA must advance the mission of the Institute and provide opportunities not available domestically.

NIDA international research priorities include:

  • Seek-test-treat and retain HIV/AIDS interventions
  • Abuse of amphetamine-type stimulants, synthetic drugs, or other designer drugs
  • Inhalant abuse
  • Smoking during pregnancy and the impact of prenatal tobacco exposure and the effects of early exposure to tobacco in young people and adolescents on development of addiction and other diseases and on cognitive development
  • Drugged driving
