The Animal Well-Being Interest Group (AWIG) comprises experts in the biomedical and veterinarian sciences with common interests in improving the care of laboratory animals and complying with laws, regulations and policies regarding animal use.
The AWIG mission is:
* to serve as a dynamic resource for the collection and dissemination of information within the NIH Intramural Research Program regarding animal welfare, environmental enrichment, and the behavioral management of laboratory animals.
* to serve as a catalyst for initiatives designed to ensure and/or document the well-being of laboratory animals and facilitate harmonization within the NIH Intramural Research Program.
The AWIG was created in 2005 as part of the Trans-NIH Enrichment Advisory Panel. Although a resource primarily for NIH researchers, we welcome and indeed seek participation from members from around the world. Our membership list includes researchers from universities, government institutions and health organizations worldwide. We meet regularly on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
