Health Disparities Seminar Series

September 2010 Seminar Series
The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) is pleased to welcome Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) as the speaker for the September 16, 2010 NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series. This month's seminar will celebrate "National Hispanic Heritage Month" with a seminar about social inequalities in the Americas.

In the Americas, the poorest and most vulnerable populations get sick or die because they don't receive the health services and health care they need to stay healthy and prevent disease. For example, residents of the poorest countries of the Region of the Americas live nearly 10 years less, on average, than residents of the richest countries do. More than one-third of infants that die before they turn one are concentrated in the group with the lowest income. In every country in the region, discrimination and exclusion take place at different levels. To end this injustice, the right to health must be expanded.

Dr. Periago will discuss strategies to improve a) health status of the most vulnerable populations, and b) health information, including the importance of data in monitoring progress and guiding decision-making on interventions that would result in better health. During her presentation, Dr. Periago will also highlight the need for improved access to health promotion, disease prevention, health services and health care. PAHO works to develop basic health infrastructure, improve education, and promote gender equality. (Click here for abstract)
