August 2011 Seminar Series
The National Institutes of Health is pleased to welcome Dr. Dennis Andrulis as the featured speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on August 25, 2011.
The importance of cultural competence in health care is increasingly recognized by policy makers, and at least 19 provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act are intended to advance research, training, or service support in this area. These provisions have given new hope to those seeking to eliminate inequalities in the health care system and the health disparities they cause. Dr. Andrulis will review the progress in documenting the evidence for the importance of culturally tailored care and discuss new opportunities and research directions. In looking to the future, he will discuss how we can expand venues for engaging providers, communities, investigators, and policymakers in the translation of research on cultural competence in our health system to practice. Dr. Andrulis is a Senior Research Scientist at the Texas Health Institute in Austin, Texas and Associate Professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of Texas' School of Public Health in Houston. He is a nationally recognized expert on primary care for the uninsured, vulnerable populations, cultural competence, and public health performance measures. His research contributions include the creation of a cultural competence self-assessment tool for healthcare organizations and the development of a compendium and analysis of national data sources on the nation's 100 largest cities and their surroundings entitled "The Social and Health Landscape of Urban and Suburban America."
