Citations for SEER Databases and SEER*Stat Software

Data Citation

The citation for each database provided by SEER should include information about the data submission and release date. If using SEER*Stat, the name of the database in SEER*Stat should be included. The citation for the selected database is shown on SEER*Stat's data tab and in print-outs of sessions and results.

Note: The SEER Research data were previously named "Limited-Use" data until May 2010. The change only affected the name of the databases and was intended to better identify the type of data.

The following are examples of citations for SEER Research, US Mortality, and US Population data.

SEER Research Data 1973-2009 when Using SEER*Stat:
Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program (www.seer.cancer.gov) SEER*Stat Database: Incidence - SEER 9 Regs Research Data, Nov 2011 Sub (1973-2009) <Katrina/Rita Population Adjustment> - Linked To County Attributes - Total U.S., 1969-2010 Counties, National Cancer Institute, DCCPS, Surveillance Research Program, Surveillance Systems Branch, released April 2012, based on the November 2011 submission.

This is an example of one SEER*Stat database. The database name, release date, and submission will vary for other databases.

When publishing statistics using these data, you should describe the subset of data used. For example, indicate years of diagnosis and the registries included in the analysis.

Citation for SEER*Stat Software

If you use SEER*Stat to analyze your data or data provided by SEER, include the following citation. Replace <version number> with the version of SEER*Stat that was used.
