The Diplomacy Fellows Program (DFP) is designed to advance eligible candidates to the Foreign Service Oral Assessment for the competitive selection of entry level Foreign Service Officer Candidates. The DFP is open only to those who:

  1. have participated in one of the nine approved fellowship programs listed below;
  2. have successfully completed all fellowship program requirements within the period January 1, 2007 to July 31, 2012 and
  3. have successfully completed a master’s degree program from a US based institution in a field relevant to the Foreign Service and provided evidence of such degree.

Diplomacy Fellows Qualifications/Eligibility +

General Qualifications for the DFP Program:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen
  • You must be at least 20 and not more than 59 at the time of application
  • You must be available for worldwide assignment
  • You may not have been separated from the Foreign Service under certain sections of the Foreign Service Act
  • You must have participated in one of the 9 eligible Fellowship programs listed below in the section titled Eligible Candidates; you must have successfully completed all fellowship program requirements within 5 years of the vacancy announcement closing date (fellowship program requirements must have been completed between January 1, 2007 – July 31, 2012 to be eligible for the 2012 Diplomacy Fellows Program) and you must have successfully completed a master’s degree program from a US based institution in a field relevant to the Foreign Service. Additionally, you must provide evidence of successful completion of an advanced degree. You are still eligible to apply to the 2012 DFP even though you may have obtained your advanced degree prior to January 2007.

Eligible Candidates

  • American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Diplomacy Fellows
  • Boren Graduate Fellowship Fellows (National Security Education Program) (Note: This is the only Boren/NSEP program currently eligible for the DFP.)
  • Fascell Fellows
  • Institute for International Public Policy Fellows (IIPP)
  • Thomas R. Pickering Fellows (Pickering undergraduate fellows are not eligible until they have completed all program requirements at the graduate level.)
  • Presidential Management Fellows, who have fulfilled their program obligations prior to registration through service at the Department of State or the Agency for International Development.
  • Truman Scholars
  • Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholars
  • Charles B. Rangel Fellows
