NHLBI and the Recovery Act

Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the NHLBI is investing its $763 million of economic stimulus funds into rigorously peer-reviewed research on the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, and blood diseases. These pages chronicle Recovery Act-funded research projects, as well as the jobs created or saved as a result of this investment.

Scientific Investments

Tracing the causes of COPD

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S., yet the causes of the disease are often unknown. With support from their NHLBI Recovery Act-funded grant, Drs. Kelsen and Merali are using already identified candidate molecules (proteins), which may play an important role in defending the lung against COPD, to see if they can be detected in the blood and if they prove to be biomarkers for susceptibility of COPD and predictors of its severity.
