2003 NEI Summer Student Program
During the summer of 2003, NEI had 21 summer students who worked for 8-12 weeks in various NEI laboratories on a variety of vision research projects. These students had diverse educational backgrounds and varied research experience. These participants included: five high school students, twelve college students, three graduate school students, and one medical school student.
In addition to their work in the lab, the students attended NIH’s 2003 Summer Lecture Series for Students, a weekly seminar series on current scientific and research topics that was developed specifically for the summer students. They were also attended "brown bag" sessions on related topics and training classes which helped to acclimate them to the NIH laboratories and to orient them to laboratory safety practices.
At the culmination of their summer internship, the students had the opportunity to participate in the NIH Summer Reseach Program Poster Day 2003. During this event, ten NEI summer students prepared posters and present posters that outlined the research that they had completed during their internship. The NIH community at large gathered to view these posters and speak with the young scientists about their summer’s work.
