Research in the NEI Intramural Program

An important component of the NEI mission is to understand the cellular, molecular, and genetic basis of eye and visual system disease, to develop pre-clinical disease models, and to carry out clinical trials with the ultimate aim of developing new interventions for the prevention and treatment of complex visual system diseases. Vision research in the 21st century will increasingly require interdisciplinary collaborations among basic scientists, physician-scientists, and clinicians. The visual system provides basic research opportunities in a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines, including the physical sciences, biology, bioengineering, and the computational sciences.
