1. Basic Search

Page title: Basic Search (NLS Online Union Catalog)

This page contains four sections: 1. Top Navigation Links, 2. Main Search, 3. Search Tips and Examples, and 4. Bottom Navigation Links.

Top Navigation Links

Before the top navigation links is a link to "skip site wide navigation". The navigation links at the top of the page contain the following: Help, Search [inactive], Search history [inactive], Heading List [inactive], Titles list [inactive], Text only version of the catalog, and Start over.

Main Search

The main section of the page begins with the heading "Database: NLS/BPH Voyager Catalog" followed by two links: Basic Search [inactive] (this page) and Guided Search [Link to the other search page].

Enter the search into three form elements that are labeled Step One, Two and Three. Step One is an edit box for the search term, step two is a list box for for selecting optional quick limits, and step three is a list box for selecting the type of search. These are followed by a list box for selecting the number of records to display per page, two buttons "begin search" and "reset", and a link for "set search limits." If you want to set additional limits such as year of production, holding agencies, format, and language, you should follow the "set search limits" link and enter the limits before entering the terms you want to search. Resuming a search after setting limits will refresh the search form removing the terms already entered in edit boxes and chosen in combo boxes.

Search Tips and Examples

This section contains a list of tips and examples for the six search types. If limits are available, there will be a link to the limits help page.

Bottom Navigation Links

The navigation links at the bottom of the page are the same as those at the top.

2. Guided Search

Page title: Guided Keyword Search (NLS Online Union Catalog)

This page contains four sections: 1. Top Navigation Links, 2. Main Search, 3. Search Tips and Examples, and 4. Bottom Navigation Links.

Top Navigation Links

Before the top navigation links is a link to "skip site wide navigation". The navigation links at the top of the page contain the following: Help, Search [inactive], search history [inactive], Heading List [inactive], Titles List [inactive], text only version of the catalog, and Start over.

Main Search

The main section of the page begins with the heading "Database: NLS/BPH Voyager Catalog" followed by two links: Basic Search [link to the other search page] and Guided Search [inactive] (this page).

A guided search allows you to use up to three search terms of one or more words. Using set of form elements for each term and logical operators joining terms, you can guide your search to narrow the results. Each set of elements for a search term begins with "search:".

The first set of elements contains an edit box for the search term(s), a list box for selecting how the terms in the edit box are combined (all of these, any of these, as a phrase), and a list box for selecting which of ten indexes against which to search:

  1. Keyword anywhere [entire record]
  2. Title
  3. Format (braille, sound, electronic)
  4. Holding Agency
  5. Name (author and or narrator)
  6. Subject Headings
  7. Annotation
  8. Content Descriptors
  9. Series
  10. Production Date

Between the first and second and the second and third sets of form elements are three radio buttons for the logical operators, and, or, not. These operators control how the terms in one entry will be combined with the terms in the following entry.

The second and third sets of form elements are exactly the same as the first set.

The last set of elements is followed by a list box for selecting the number of records per page to retrieve and then by two buttons, "begin search" and "reset".

Following these buttons, is a picture link to another page to set search limits. If you want to set additional limits such as a range of production years or a language, you should follow the "set search limits" link and enter the limits before entering the terms you want to search. Resuming a search after setting limits will refresh the search form removing the terms already entered in edit boxes and chosen in list boxes.

Page title: (NLS Online Union Catalog)

This page contains three sections: 1. Top Navigation Links, 2. Headings List, and 3. Bottom Navigation Links.

Top Navigation Links

Before the top navigation links is a link to "skip site wide navigation". The navigation links at the top of the page contain the following: Help, Search, search history, Heading List [inactive], Titles list [inactive], text only version of the catalog, and Start over.

Headings List

Before the table is a line with a restatement of the search, "You Searched", and a description of the search followed by a line indicating which search results are displayed on this page. Both before and after the table is a pair of links, "previous" and "next" for moving backwards and forwards in the heading list.

The headings list is a table with four columns, the number of rows is dependant on the number selected in the number of records list box on the search page.

The four columns are: 1. Row number, 2. Number of hits, 3. Heading column, and 4. Type of heading.

Each heading is linked to retrieve the list of records associated with that heading. Some headings will not retrieve any records. They are present because they are cross references. In this case, the first column will contain a link labeled More Info.

Bottom Navigation Links

The navigation links at the bottom of the page are the same as those at the top.

5. Titles List

Page title: Titles List (NLS Online Union Catalog)

This is the page you get for searches of the keyword, title, and command keyword indexes, and when you select a link from a headings list.

This page is divided into seven sections: 1. Top Navigation Links, 2. Search Restatement and Results Pagination 3. Titles List, 4. Results Pagination, 5. Save, Print, and E-mail Table, 6. Revise Search and Submit Search Section, and 7. Bottom Navigation Links.

Top Navigation Links

Before the top navigation links is a "skip site wide navigation" link. The navigation links that are skipped contain the following: Help, Search, Search History, Heading List, Titles List [inactive], Text only version of the catalog, and Start over.

Search Restatement, Results Location, and Results Sorting

The next section of the page begins with the heading "Database: NLS/BPH Voyager Catalog". The following line is a restatement of the search as "You Searched" and a description of the search followed by a line indicating which search results are displayed on this page. The maximum number of results is set at the time of search.

When the results are more than the maximum, there are pagination links for "previous" and "next". When the results require more than two pages, there will be successive number links between previous and next. The number links will be in multiples of the maximum set on the search page.

The last element of this section is a table that contains the list box, "resort search results by:" This enables a resorting of search results by Full Title, Main Author, Date Ascending or Date Descending. When one of the options is selected, Javascript causes the screen to reinitialize and to present the current results in the new order, beginning with the first record.

Titles List

The main section of the page is a collection of nested tables that present the list of titles. The contents of the table will differ, depending upon the index selected for the search. Each item in the list includes these elements that span two rows over six, sometimes five, columns:

Record Number Check box
The record number check box is displayed for keyword, title, and command keyword searches. This form element is first item and spans both rows. It enables, by checking, selection of particular titles in the results list for further action, such as saving, printing and e-mailing.
Relevance
The relevance element is displayed for keyword searches in the second cell of the first row for the item. Relevance is represented graphically by showing from 1 to 5 symbols, with more symbols equating to greater relevance. This item spans two rows, as does the record number check box. Each symbol can be displayed in half or in whole. A whole symbol has the alt text of two plus signs. A half symbol has the alt text of one plus sign.
Title
The title element is displayed for title index searches in the second cell of the first row of an item. It will not appear if the title list was produced in the course of a keyword or command keyword index search.
Author
The author element is displayed in the next cell of the first row of an item. This element is displayed for keyword, title, and command keyword index searches. It follows title for results of a title search. It follows relevance for results of a keyword search. For a command keyword search, author follows the record number check box.
Title Long
The full title element is displayed in the next cell of the first row of an item This element is displayed for keyword, title, and command keyword index searches. It serves as a link to a brief record display, which is described below.
Date
The four-digit year of the date of production of the special format version of the book is displayed in the next cell of the first row of an item. It is also a link to the brief record display for that title. If a title is in process, the "pipe" character replaces each digit of the year of production. When pronunciation of punctuation is off, the result is simply, "link".
Electronic Resource
The last cell in the first row of an item may, or may not, have content. When an item has an electronic version, for instance, web braille books, the icon, "Electronic Resource Available" will appear. The alt text of this icon is "Record Contains Link to Electronic Resource".
Location
The second item of the bottom row for each item is a table cell that spans between the record number check box and the end of the row. The cell contains a nested table with two cells. The first cell of this nested table contains the label, "LOCATION:" followed by the name of the producing agency.
Book Number
The second item of the nested table is a cell with the label, "BOOK NUMBER:" followed by the number assigned by the producing agency. The term, "INPROCESS" will appear if the book has not completed.

After the table is a "Set search limits" link, "Clear Marked records" button, and "Retain marked records" button.
