NIH requires an efficient, secure, and robust mechanism for registering people into the NIH enterprise directory, and provisioning them with network accounts and email boxes. Additionally, an automated process is needed to remove network accounts and email boxes when individuals leave NIH.  The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) implemented a successful provisioning system to meet these needs - Constellation.

The NIH Enterprise Architecture provides the reference for how this solution may be implemented at the enterprise level to provide a more efficient and secure mechanism for enrolling people at NIH.

Anticipated Benefits

  • Cost Avoidance – The NHLBI solution can be deployed across NIH so that the existing NIH Enterprise Directory (NED) entry can drive the creation of multiple accounts, thus avoiding the need to develop a new capability.
  • Leveraged Savings – The benefits and value that NHLBI has recognized can be extend throughout all of NIH.
    • Save time for NIH Administrative Officers by implementing a more streamlined and faster provisioning process
    • Reduce errors
    • Simplified process allowed a recent building move to be accomplished with automatic updates to distribution lists, printer access and network access.
    • Security benefits by immediate disabling of accounts removed from NED
